| More than 70,000 Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) members and activists joined EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy and EDF President Fred Krupp in an exclusive post-State of the Union tele-town hall last week.
During the call, Administrator McCarthy expanded on President Obama's environmental and energy agenda and shared insights into the agency’s plans to unveil rules to reduce carbon pollution from existing power plants—the number 1 source of greenhouse gas in the U.S.
We were all impressed with the audience participation and the number of thoughtful and engaging questions.
If you couldn't make it, missed part of the call, or you’d like to listen again, you can download this recording of the town hall from our website.
While on the call, participants also had the chance to vote on our poll questions. Here are the results: - 76% had watched the State of the Union address the previous night.
- 79% have been following news about the recent chemical spill in West Virginia.
- 49% say our top priority should be placing national limits on carbon pollution from power plants; 43% say it should be increasing use of renewable energy sources.
More than 1,700 callers submitted a question to be answered. Many callers had questions about the Keystone XL (KXL) pipeline, which we regrettably did not have time to address during the call.
EDF stands with our allies in the environmental community in opposing the KXL pipeline. It would be a step in the wrong direction at a time when we need a rapid shift to clean energy in order to safeguard the climate and our economy. Secretary Kerry and President Obama must now decide whether the pipeline is in the national interest. We think it is clearly not.
We’re thrilled to have been able to offer our members this rare opportunity to ask questions of the EPA Administrator, and we hope you’ll join us for similar events we may be able to offer in the future.
Thank you for everything you do,
