In the race to tackle the climate crisis, many U.S. states are leading the way. In Wednesday's “State Climate Action” slideshow, you can really see how this local action is making a global impact.

State climate action has included some of our most important and impactful victories in recent years: - AB32, the California climate bill launched the world’s largest economy-wide cap-and-trade program
- The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), America’s first carbon cap-and-trade system covering major power plants in nine Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states
- Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) programs in 29 states that require utilities to generate a minimum percentage of power from clean, renewable sources
Your donation to the Climate Action Fund will support continued development and expansion of ground-breaking climate action in the states.
The states are also where we’ve fought to hang on to the progress we’ve made. Last year, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) introduced 37 bills in state legislatures around the country to roll back RPS programs. They even introduced bills to mandate teaching climate denial to our children in school! Happily, all their efforts failed.
But ALEC is back. This year, they’ve drafted model bills to introduce in legislatures around the country including: - A resolution calling for Congress to pass pro-coal-fired-electricity legislation,
- A model bill to increase electric costs for consumers generating their own solar power, and
- A scaled-back attack on RPS that would weaken and gradually eliminate standards rather than repeal them entirely.
